Portage Valley History

Today’s Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices—an organization long-defined by innovation and compassion — has been gaining support and momentum since its founding. It is still driven by vision and faith.

Our origins date back to 1912, when the first Otterbein community was built in Lebanon, Ohio. The full story of Otterbein’s founding is quite inspiring.

Originally a home for the elderly and orphaned, in the 1960’s Otterbein devoted itself exclusively to enhancing the quality of life and holistic growth of older persons.

Since then, Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices has grown to include retirement communities, skilled nursing and rehab neighborhoods, and home health. We continue to look forward with vision and faith.

The Otterbein Portage Valley Community didn’t come into being easily.  Although the project, led by local physician, Dr. Thomas P. Bowlus, was incorporated in 1975 to liberate seniors from inferior care, building it was an uphill battle all the way. Its founders waged a five-year fight against bureaucracy and underfunding.

Driven by faith, vision, compassion and tireless determination, the noble grassroots effort prevailed. The first resident entered Portage Valley in 1980, and the community immediately earned a reputation for the outstanding care, quality of life and choice it is known for today.
